Established in 2013 by British composer Andrew Webb-Mitchell, the Centre for Choral Studies is unique in China as the only arts organisation to specialize in western classical music, providing conservatory-standard musical training in the English Choral Tradition to children aged 8-18.

The centre’s flagship ensemble, Zhuhai Classical Children’s Choir, is emerging as one of Asia’s finest choral ensembles. The choir made its professional debut in 2016 performing at the inaugural concert of the Changsha Concert Hall with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Zubin Mehta, followed a few days later by a performance with Sinfonietta Cracovia conducted by Jurek Dybal. Subsequently, the choir has performed in numerous prestigious concerts and at some of China’s most important concert venues.

On New Year’s Eve 2016, Zhuhai Classical Children’s Choir featured in two inaugural concerts at the Zhuhai Opera House, singing Russian repertoire with the Russian National Orchestra under Thomas Sanderling. Also during the 2016-17 season, the choir featured in concerts with the Guiyang Symphony Orchestra conducted by Rico Saccani, singing the challenging chorus parts in Holst Planets Suite and Puccini Madama Butterfly.

The Zhuhai Classical Children’s Choir is trained in the English choral traditional and sings exclusively Western classical music. In October 2016, the choir sang for Princess Anne in Kuala Lumpur. The choir made its Beijing debut in November 2017, appearing at the Central Conservatory of Music as part of the International Chamber Music Festival. This performance was subsequently broadcast on China Central Television. In September 2019, Zhuhai Classical Children’s Choir featured in two concerts with the Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra under Volker Hartung, performing work by Wagner and Mozart.

Zhuhai Classical Children’s Choir is currently official choir in residence at Zhuhai Opera House.
